Juicy Contaminated Circle – From Art to Life and Back

Sommerakademie at the Zentrum Paul Klee

The Sommerakademie is an international platform for contemporary art with
theme-specific workshops, which takes place annually in August. It promotes artistic
production and reflection, as well as increased interaction between artists and curators,
inviting them to participate in a ten-day programme in Berne to work and network
with well-known figures from the art world.
Together with our founding partner the BEKB | BCBE Berner Kantonalbank AG, and
the Zentrum Paul Klee, the programme is breaking new ground.
Theme
During this year’s Sommerakademie, we will trace the circle of art production through
curating, art education, observation, understanding, oral and visual feedback, back to
production. Art affects the viewer and vice versa. This interaction is visible. The curators,
artists, art educators and the audience are involved in this process. The circular movement
replaces the one-way street. Or to put it another way, art acts as a transmitter and the
receivers return the signals. The orbits of art and art viewing are being made visible.
The workshops 12 meet 12 will give groups of twelve participants from both art related
and non-art related backgrounds the possibility to see the Fellows’ contributions and give
feedback.
Concept and Guest Curators
The Sommerakademie 2011 will be curated by Pipilotti Rist in collaboration with
Franziska Dürr, collaborative guest curator.
Pipilotti Rist (*1962) is a renowned Swiss video artist, whose use of moving pictures has
made her a pioneer in the genre. For further information visit:

There was considerable competition for involvement in the Sommerakademie 2011.
Applications by 83 artists and 13 curators gave a total of 96 entries from 25 nations. The
jury’s selection was based on high artistic quality and a clear reference to this year’s theme
within the artists’ practice.

workshops and hold public lectures.

Collaborations
The Sommerakademie places great emphasis on its links with the local community.
In addition to the partnership with the Zentrum Paul Klee, the Sommerakademie will also
be co-operating with the Stadtgalerie PROGR Bern and the Kunsthalle Bern.
Programme and public events
This year’s programme will feature a series of public events in addition to the artists’
workshops.
The opening and closing events will take place in the Zentrum Paul Klee; further events
will be held at the Stadtgalerie.
All events are free and open to everyone.
